Oh come on - you's are going a bit far with the DA adoration aren't yous?!!

The whole crux of this thread is basically people being afraid that Muslims are taking over the country.

That's what this is all about isn't it? They can't have a call to prayer out loud!! Not in England!!! Not in Oxford!!! That's our country ruined now - they've won, they've taken our country!!!

This is the basic view point of everyone who is freaking out on this thread (freaking out so much yous are voting for a ******* agent to be PM can I point out!!! That's how far this has got now!!!)

What us "liberals" (as you've labeled us) are trying to say is calm down!! No one is taking over anything!! Oxford will still be Oxford, the country will still be as predominantly white, "pure English", and churchy as always.....nothing is going to change!!! It's just a small group within the community who are applying to voice a prayer call a few times a day for a few minutes at a time.

It's not a war between them and us - or at least, it shouldn't be!! There's enough space for everyone!!

And you are right to to say that we may be getting a little hysterical about muslims. There is a quid pro quo about all this which is that if they were to for example allow us to take the p*** out of their religion, condemn extremism then maybe that fear we all supposedly have of them would dissipate. It is up to them to show us that they are deserving of our respect and tolerance just as much as it is up to us to extend the same tolerance to them.

We have led they way by showing more tolerance to diversity than any other country on this planet.

The way things work in Britain is that religion does not control us. It is there yes, but it is not above ridicule, satire or democracy and as soon as muslims accept this the we will all be equal and get along just fine.

Erm, well, yes - that is part of it. It should be a privilege to live in another country - not a right. I quite fancy living in California, but they aren't about to just let me in, support me, house me, etc.

The compromise is that British law should not be bent to accommodate religious doctrine. So if a muslim wishes to pray during office hours then the compromise is his not ours. If a muslim wishes to break rules (dress in schools for example) then he/she lives with the consequences. If a muslim wishes to kill sheep illegally then he should not be surprised if he is prosecuted. If muslims live here and the school curriculum says they must learn English history then they learn English history.

If they or anyone wants to practice their religion, support Pakistan at cricket, learn Arabic, or study the sexual exploits of the prophet mohammed then let them do so. If they want to go on TV and send up Christianity, vomit on the pavement in central Andover, or get their ti*s out in public then fine.
