If someone chooses to live here and decides not to learn to speak English then it is their problem if they cannot communicate with say the council, the school teacher or the chemist.

Christianity very much represents the history and culture behind Britishness. It represents the availability of religion to people in this country yet it knows its place as an institution that complements our democratic system (in other words we can take it or leave it, take the p*ss out of it, and our political system is dominated by debate and argument rather than superstition). On the other hand Islam represents in many ways an ongoing battle to impose its will upon people, to stamp out democracy and religious freedom.

So when the church bells ring they give a unthreatening sense of security that reminds us of how our democracy and civilised way of life has evolved, and why we are free to hold whatever views we like. The mosque "call to prayer" on the other hand represents a different view that is symbolic and in many ways threatening. If mosques are prepared to subsidiarise themselves to Britishness, in the way that Christianity subsidiarises itself to democracy (flying a union jack on the roof) then maybe we can debate "call to prayer" on the basis of noise rather than as a symbol of "tolerance"

          oi Winston, less of it

I toyed (hope that wasn't another piece of meat for the spelling police) with using sows or sews but kept reading sows as in the female pig so opted for sews hence the mistake

          back on track,

you lot don't complain about immigration when your house prices are rising

if you want to influence decisions and policy, forget posting acres of carp on here and better spend your time visiting the local council meetings with a longer term view to getting elected and representing people with the same views as yourselves

the fact is, the indigenous population have become politically lazy and then wonder why policies are all in favour of others

there's something for you armchair experts to think about

          Milan.

For once milan you have a point. The apathy of the voter is as much to blame as anything for the ills of society, the wretched political system and the poor performance of the public services.

The only reason that Thatcher came to power was because people woke up too late to the problems that had been caused by socialists

They're going there for the weather and the low cost of living.

I'm not saying whether I think this is an amazing thing for the Spanish people, but it's amazing for them. Much like it's amazing for the foreigners being able to move to this country.
              Oh for gawds sake....

Being a pensioner doesn't suddenly make you an imbecile!!!

My Grandfather can now speak 8 languages and plays around with Linux boxes to keep himself busy and he's 85. He has been able to use his retirement to learn all those things he never got round to learning when he was stuck in the world of work because he doesn't have anything to do any more.

You don't have to be a scholar to learn a language, they managed English didn't they? Same principle (In fact slightly easier if it's all masculine and feminine with no concept of it) just different words.

Old people are just as clever as us young un's and they have all the benefits of experience as well!!!

Old people are pathetic. They drive slowly they are set in their ways they refuse to learn anything new and therefore expect the rest of society to accommodate them. no wonder we hate them. Your grandad is a prime example of how old people should behave. They should be interested in learning new things, and language is a great example. Retirement accelerates old age.

That's really good for your Grandfather Ardesco - well done him - he sounds like an exceptionally bright and gifted bloke. You should be very proud.

Dont, however, assume everyone living in this country learns languages for kicks though eh?
