If he won't get notice. He makes big conclusion on the basis of his renewal that he won't be terminated in the next 6 months and therefore all is okay in the City. No, all is not okay - there will certainly be a lot of people fired, how many depends on depth of the downturn, but for now they will sure renew because they know they can can contract at any time.

So, even though they know that layoffs are round the corner, they continue to renew, right up until the week the axeman cometh.

          HTH

PS. Don't take out a big mortgage on the back of your contract extension.
I agree with you. However to say it means nothing is possiby not quite true either. Certainly any PM/Manager etc that signs off a renewal would perform some sort of due diligence looking at resource requirements etc before committing a 6 month spend on a suppler even if in reality it may not run the full 6 months.

It does mean nothing from strategic point of view - from personal point of view of that contractor of course it means everything even if he knows he might get canned in a month.

From strategic point of view (sacking lots of people in case of downturn) renewal of a contract with a short notice means nothing because this contract can be terminated at a very short notice, so until hour X they will renew contracts, possible giving notice next day after renewal was made. It's just the way big systems work.

Ok worst case scenario they want to get rid of him in a couple of months, in two months they give him notice (I presume your notice is 1 month) then that’s an extra month pay, therefore the extension would work out to be 3 months instead of 6 months!! Win win situation if you ask me..

Anyway this thread is about me me me me .. stop high jacking it

I am a bit slow but now that I understand what you mean more clearly I would have to agree.
