I merely have a view, that all immigration (EU included) needs to be through a thorough process of application, screening and selection, and that more people does not make a country a better place, in the same way as stuffing your living room with 100 Phd grads does not make it a more confortable living area.

Sometimes it's hard to debate with irrational topics. It seems that if you are not against immigration then means you approve everything. DimPrawn and Troll do seem to forget that because of immigration UK has more economic power than countries like Albania. Norway might have a low immigration but their wealth is due to natural resources not human capital. Same for Switzerland where now it seems like immigrants are the black sheep of society. Are we forgetting that it's them who built most of the country? Would DimPrawn and Troll send their children to work at Benji for 4 quid an hour? Having said that doesn't make me a left pinko communist who believes in wild immigration and that there should be some regulation and that in case it poses a threat to national security it should be limited. However it seems that if you are not a xenophobic, history and economics unsavant, then you are with the evil.

For EU there is a bilateral agreement so you cannot do what you want. There are checks in all countries and if you are deemed to be dangerous they have the right to expel you. Apart from that you cannot discriminate between someone who has a PhD or a dish washer if from EU. I don't see how the legislation could be changed neither what you are proposing. You cannot decide that in UK you have only french people with the PhD while others EU countries have to take the less qualified ones. You might do that with the countries where there is no bilateral agreement so it's only your business.

EU countries are discriminating, legally:
Romanians are restricted to self employed and work permit applicants. The French only allow Western EU workers (they havnt got any jobs anyway) etc etc.

I said that it should be controlled in terms of potential danger to the population, agreed. But it should not discriminate on the quality of the workforce. A tape changer like Milan is just as good as a brilliant educated professional like me for all it cares and the rights it gives.
