Pardon me, you are correct. I read incorrectly.

"Therefore by analogy if you see someone beating up a stranger and intervene and you are accused of assault then you could use the Criminal Law Act to say 'I've a defence because I've prevented a crime'"
It's about time I changed this sig...

I've no idea how serious the the gun/knife problem is on the streets in relation to the media hype, but I'm certainly in no hurry to find out.

The thugs have worked themselves into this position of power because the innocent public are left with no viable choices; give a thug a beating and you've committed assault; take on an armed thug and you get a knife in your chest; report a thug and nothing happens because a stop-and-search will violate their rights.

The only thing that's going to bring law and order back to the streets is a strong sense of togetherness amongst the law-abiding citizens at a community level, however this isn't the 1950's any more and people perceive insufficient incentive to build local connections in comparison to the other things going on in their lives.
Yes you're right I would think twice, because nobody wants to end up dead or in intesive care. But at the end of the day I couldn't stand by and watch it happen even if I was tulipting my pants, it's just not in me.

Also saying people have no choice is in my opinion an excuse for not doing anything.

Perhaps, on balance, it would be best to discreetly dial 999, report it, then chuck something at the antagonists, yell and distract them - draw the attention onto you, then run like the wind.

It's your duty to have a go, I was talking to a Polish guy who helped some people getting attacked, he took off his belt and gave them a good belting, (luckily his trousers didn't fall down ) . The fear of someone carrying a knife is not justification for letting these clowns run amok, people who use that excuse are, IMHO, excusing their own cowardice.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

I would pull out my .445 Magnum and blast every one of the c**** in the face, then skin them alive in front of horrified passers by.
