I suppose if you not in it for that, I just can't see it that way, i like it to be as competitive as possible

Otherwise I'd just go down the gym to keep fit.

Ah ha, the petulance of youth. First young dragon you must find yourself then you can find competition.

Seriously though, to me it's about more than competition and violence.

lol maybe maybe, I was never into the spiritual thing anyway.

I just like the competition, being peak of physical fitness, being faster, stronger than your opponent

all this talk has made me want to start again, maybe I can just salvage my six pack before it gets consumed with the aftermath of good living

Being in shape is a big pro of martial arts, I find an intense training session gets you in much better all-round shape than trotting down to the gym.

hmm, I think "Smarter" counts for more in competition, given of course the basic fitness and skill level. The ease at which I have seen 5th and 6th + Dans somehow teleport themselves behind me was initially very disheartening, but over time I learned that they were doing it because effectiveness pays, i.e the minimum expenditure of effort for the maxium gain. No point going toe to toe with a guy twice your size if you can "get him out" easier.

                smarter counts.

yes of course, being able to read your opponent, have goiod footwork, knowing when to attack etc etc.

It all comes with training, the harder you train the better you get simple.

If you want to get properly fit, take up kendo. An hour's practice in full armour wearing a horsehair-and-steel helmet and weilding a shinai is the best aerobic workout I've ever had. And since it's full contact, it's a damn good way to vent your frustrations at the end of a bad week!

I'll even sell you the bogu....

Not Necessarily , harder is not always better, elegance, finesse and gracefulness are very important, but what I'm actually really mentally talking about is humility and respect, the most often mistake made in guaging your opponent is underestimating him/her and overestimating your own ability. We need only look at Iraq to see that all the toys and equipment in the world won't make a difference if the heart is not in it.

I work with a kendo dude, and he has this ahem........... stare., thats well, not like anything I've seen before.
