Yes, I have thought of those. I like Chile especially.

What sort of job / commuting are you going to do at 55+ yrs old living in Chile, doing IT and not speaking the lingo properly?

        Dream on.

Your life would be blessed with a significantly greater number of choices if you dumped the smoking woman.

Swiss signed a bilateral agreement with the EU no problem for you and other half to go there and work. Swiss company has to look for a local person first if nobody local then anybody in the EU, then anybody world wide. Americans and Australians not to happy 320 million in EU they have no chance.

Since the new agreement companies don’t seem to be paying relocation expenses. It’s a big commitment going to Switzerland need a lot of up-front money for somewhere to stay while looking for job if you don’t already have one, deposit etc. They have two moving months April and October when it’s easier to move to a new apartment.

I was there for 5 years then I had enough, I was lucky I went with a group of guys I was working on projects in Germany and USA with. But slowly they drifted off till there were only of us 3 left, more Germans started to work in the company since the agreement. The last of us left around the same time.

If the people you work with are important to you then Zurich may not be the place. If you are more interested in outside work nice walks etc. you’ll be ok.

None. PRC1964 mentioned it and I said I liked it. I might think about spending more time there after I don't have to work, or indeed between periods of working. I hadn't mentioned it earlier because it does indeed not fit this phase of life.

We're off to the Languedoc in 5 years (when I'm 50). Warm climate, close to the Med and the ski slopes, property quite reasonable, great countryside, brilliant food and wine, people still quite friendly.

Bavaria? Munich has nice parks, restaurants and bars, it’s not too expensive, I would have thought that jobs are aplenty, climate is nice, rail and air links are second to none, most Germans speak English and are happy to do so, I don’t know about the smoking or crime though.

Whenever I go to Germany I can’t help but wonder why the Brits ridicule them so much (apart from the obvious recent history) it’s like the UK but more sensible and grown up.

Come to think of it most German cities are good but Munich is probably the pick of the bunch in my book.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson
