I don't smoke. I do allow for my partner's indulgence in not going to bars or restaurants where she can't smoke. So what I'm looking for is a place where we will in practice go out together.God made men. Sam Colt made them equal. -

I can't think of any part of the world apart from the tops of mountains and the poles where there are "no bugs". But you also say you don't want somewhere that is -30. And then you must be able to smoke in bars etc.
Forget it. You ain't going to be happy anywhere.Comment

Is part of the UK and hence no smoking.Originally posted by portsevenComment

I'm quite happy in a lot of places, I'm just looking for info and discussions on what is around.Originally posted by King CnvtI can't think of any part of the world apart from the tops of mountains and the poles where there are "no bugs". When I say no bugs, I mean that in normal life one would not expect to be bitten, so that someone who is very sensitive to it will not have to live in some kind of isolation. Actually most places fit that, but many places that come to mind as pleasant destinations do not.
So, for example, the S of England is OK, but the N of Scotland is not. Much of the Med coast is not, but Madrid is (there are surprisingly few flying biters there, too dry I think).
I am impressed by how many people had something to contribute to this (perhaps we all think about it), but also by how many people think that it is criminally presumptuous and demandin even to think about where in the world you might be allowed to smoke and not get bitten!
King Cnvt, you are staggered by how much I am asking for? That is, in a different way, my feeling too: how hard it is to find all of just a few characteristics.Last edited by Euro-commuter; 10 July 2007, 07:35.God made men. Sam Colt made them equal.Comment

Well if you find somewhere that:
has jobs
space
not too cold
can smoke
not too expensive
not too far from EU
speaks english
no bugs
let me know and I'll join you out there for a beer and smoke.
I don't think such a place has been created yet. Have you thought about Mars in 500 years time?Comment

All you need to do is start smoking yourself. Bugs hate smoke and will stay away. So the more smoke, the better...Comment

I don't think I said "not too cold", most people read it in because it's part of their wish list.Originally posted by King CnvtWell if you find somewhere that:

If you could smoke and not get savaged by midgies in NW Scotland, that would be it.
Smoking may well have to go, but I thought I'd ask
It's optional, but the result of a smoking ban is just that we never go out to eat or drink, and I did quite like doing that.
And I don't think I said "has jobs". I commute weekly now, I can keep doing that. Prefer not to, but...
When I say "no bugs" I'm being unclear, sorry. I mean that they are not so omnipresent that someone sensitive to bites will expect to alter their life to avoid them.
...I started off asking for everything, to see if it was possible. So if we throw out the smoking, and remember that I'm not looking for any particular climate (except that I dislike continuous baking sun), don't expect to find jobs locally, and don't need a native English-speaking population, what do we have?
Or should I look the other way: keep low cost of living, smoking, and low bug problem? Then I think it's tropical or sub-tropical, either on an island or high up. St Maarten? Guadeloupe? Ecuador? Mexico? Kenya? India?God made men. Sam Colt made them equal.Comment

Cuba? Low-cost, safe, beautiful, civilised, fun, good medical care. And fly home without all your passenger details going to the US security agencies.Originally posted by Cowboy BobAll you need to do is start smoking yourself. Bugs hate smoke and will stay away.
