Parts of Scotland are poss: NE, E, E Grampians, SE (borders), Galloway. Not to mention similar parts of England (I can stand the jolly chaffing from the natives about my origins).

Germany is OK, I do like Munich and they are resisiting the anti-smoking lot but for how long I don't know. Austria??

    France is a distinct possibility.

But I'm still dreaming of casting a bit wider, to see if it's possible...

Brits who live here (I work in FFM) don't, it's exactly as you describe.

Come to think of it most German cities are good but Munich is probably the pick of the bunch in my book.
        I like Munich.

Over the weekend I was in a little village called Buzancais in the Berry region of France, I am told it is the lake district of France but I wasn’t there long enough to explore but what I did see was extremely picturesque.

Whilst looking in the estate agents window I saw a 4 bed detached with pool and gardens for 170,000 Euro I also has a 'table d'hote' for 7 Euro including wine, great if you want to retire but I don’t think there would me many jobs unless you want to be a farm hand.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

What about the smoking? It may sound trivial but it isn't. I don't smoke but my partner does. So in a non-smoking place like Scotland, and now England, the consequence is not a bit of inconvenience, it is that we never go out eating or drinking. Never. Because it just wouldn't be enjoyable.

Huge areas of France are like that. No work for anybody but farmers, and if you ever come to sell your house, you will be looking for another Brit because the locals do not buy hoses for that price.

Until and if you retire, it's the weekly commute. But I'm doing that from England anyway.

                  Liechtenstein

                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liechtenstein

Not in the EU, been there once, you can smoke in the cafes all day , low tax , english/italian/german speaking.
You can work in Germany / Switzerland and live in the small tax haven...
                  The rest is silence...

I have been there and I liked it. Someone compared it to John Galt's valley

But I researched while I was working in Zürich and it seemed to me that you could not live in it unless you had a job there.

Edit: it seems that as part of its membership of the EEA, Liehctenstein does issue residence permits to EEA citizens who are not economically active. 8 permits a year, so take a number.

Addendum: Austria seems to share much of what I like about Liechtenstein, except for low tax. But it's not punitive (less than Germany for example), and taxes aren't everything.

How about France or Germany, but close enough to Switzerland to do days or evenings out?
