    New Kitchen

I've finally submitted to the repeated requests for a new Kitchen (in reality the old one is falling to pieces at an accelerating rate).

Some questions on which I would value some feedback

    1. Anyone recommend a supplier. Is it best to stay with the DIY sheds or is online a viable source.
    2. What sort of total cost am I looking at (Kitchen 20ft x 15ft, units three sides - one long, two short). I am aware installation can be as much as the cost of the units.

Thanks in advance for all the comment

How big is your budget? this will limit your choice to council house or quality ranges

Also choice of worktop is a significant cost

and you should double the unit costs to allow for fitting
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

Ikea have some very nice and very cheap kitchens which will allow you to spend lots of dosh on a Granite worktop which gives a particularly special and expensive look to a kitchen done on a budget. (some friends have done this and I have been very impressed)

£10k - £15k for something nice I reckon...(although never bought one so actually have no idea!)

You might want to inform the missus though that as she is a fixture of the kitchen then get to replace her as well...its only right and proper...so actually, you need to allow £250k for the divorce so total of between £260k and £265k for the new kitchen

we had one last year and used MFI. I would highly recommend them but as siad elsewhere the price is in the labour as much you can do your self the better.

I stripped the tiles off the wall and took some of the cupboards off. This saved me £300 which is what they were quoting to do it.
Thats the way the cookie crumbles

I'm having my kitchen done right now at the same time as I'm having the house rewired. Nightmare! I'm getting a mate who has his own building company to do the work and the kitchen is going to cost me around £10k. My kitchen is slightly larger than yours, and I'm having integral appliances put in. Basically, he's charging peanuts for labour (friend discount + cash in hand + my wife looks after their little'un during the week), so I'm getting it done very cheaply. He has indicated that if I was a 'proper customer, the job would cost £18-£20k.

Be prepared for massive disturbance. We moved out last Tuesday and don't expect to move in again for another week as we are also having every single wall and ceiling plastered.

I've fitted a few and use either Magnet or Howden ( MFI kitchens for trade ), the carcasses are pre assembled which saves a lot on labour. They both do a decent brochure and have a price list, you are looking at 60-70% off the list price, you might have to haggle hard at Magnet to get that but it is available. I've fitted them myself and used lads from the boozer for specialist bits but there will be local fitters who do a bit of everything and will be cheaper then using a supplier fitting service. Cost depends on the kitchen you choose obviously and how much bashing around of your existing kitchen you intend doing. Get a quote for a fully fitted kitchen and then start working backwards from there, you'll save a lot if you go DIY. Ikea kitchens aren't bad but you'll have to assemble the carcasses.

Just planning a big rewiring and new kitchen job, a nightmare in the making ! If it goes to plan we'll have another house to live in at the time but I'm still dreading it, the Mrs is a demanding and often unreasonable client and is also expecting a baby. Should be fun !

Don't get me started on this. My missus is a nightmare (there's too much dust, they've marked the wall, etc, etc, blah, blah). I've now banned her from the house until it is complete.

We were originally told we would only need to move out for a couple of days, but I reckon it will be a total of three weeks in the end. We're 'living' in our holiday mobile home 40 miles away, which is interesting as she has to drive the kids to school every morning. I'm looking forward to getting this damned thing finished now....

My dad runs a company that makes fitted kitchens and we've recently had one put in our new house. Even with the family discount its come in at around ~15k (including appliances) but then it is walnut, fully fitted, granite throughout including the utility room

Don't forget to factor in the cost of a spark, and make sure you get a cert for the wiring. You can no longer DIY kitchen electrics without getting it certified.
