"I haven't noticed my council tax rising (probably cause I'm so well off now thanks to the wonderful country I live in).

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/A2352232

Since 97 Council tax has gone up by 70%. Looks like a pretty big increase to me, but like you I can afford it. Not everybody is in that position. A pensioner on a fixed small income feels this increase more than you and me. This is why there are so many pensioners refusing to pay it, because they can’t. I suppose that John Reid will have to let a few ‘harmless’ criminals out of our prisons to create room for these dangerous pensioners.

"House prices rising - yes I love it."

How is that down to the government? House price rises are a symptom of a lack of supply driving up demand. How much are these houses going to be worth when the massive debt burden which has built up since 97 comes home to roost.

"Taxes on everything - never really noticed. and if you're taking about cars, don’t have one."

If you had a car then you certainly would notice this. As you don’t have a car then you are an exception to the norm. So how about airport tax, increase duty of booze & cigs, not moving the tax thresholds to pull more and more people into the 40% tax bracket, increase in NI and employers NI, Pensions raid - there have been loads. In this budget he is set to announce his 100th tax rise.

"Uncontrollable immigration - the only reason we have figures of immigration now is down to Labour. We simply didn't know how many immigrants we had before."

Well that is one way to look at it. But they have been in power for 10 years and it took them most of that to start counting. Then when they did they admitted that they didn't have a clue how many were here. What were they estimating would be the net effect of EU expansion? 12k? Oh no it ended up being 600k and even that was an estimate.

"The war - I was behind it at the time, “

Blair and co lied about the justification for the war. There were/are no WMD and Blair knew that. He used that reason because forcing a regime change would have been illegal – Hence the war IS illegal since regime change was the real reason all along.

“cant complain that it's went tits up. "

Why not? It was obvious to everybody that the whole Iraq thing was going to be a nightmare which this government had not thought through. It is an event which is costing us a fortune to take part in - in terms of money and the lives of our badly equipped soldiers.

“IR35 - yes, its a good thing. We should definately be getting the richer people to start paying the taxes they should be.”

?? So it’s a good thing to be taxed as the employee but also the employer. It’s a good thing to stump up 2 lots of NI. So do you actually pay up for IR35?

    “More jobs”

More burger flippers as the high tech roles go east. More jobs in the public sector paid for by the taxes of those in the private sector. Practically no manufacturing left.

“better standard of living for all”

The gap between the rich and poor has increased since 97. The rich have got richer while the poor are more and more dependant on benefits such as tax credits. Much of this better standard of living is paid for by credit. That cannot go on forever.

    “hospital waiting lists cut”

    By fiddling the stats.

    “more school places”

Surely that is a factor of the population. Were people not getting an education before 97?

But then consider the fact that we are now paying record levels of tax to fund these improvements. The tax burden in this country has shifted massively but the revenues have been largely wasted. How much did the dome cost? Name one government IT system which has come in on price and which actually works. Better still tell me why the government continues to throw our money at these suppliers who have a track record of failure.
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

    I preferred version 1!

Because this government is commercially naïve and in complete awe of private heavy hitters (EDS et al) who screw them every which way they turn with inflated project costs and change controls with further costs added. The government acts like a rabbit in the headlights…

You're all kidding yourselves with this "NL wastes money on IT systems" thing like. Do you all honestly think this only started happenning in the last 10 years?
EDS, Andersons (now Accenture), SEMA, et al were all heavily involved in IT systems before NL came in. They worked WITH the in house agency (ITSA) who were made up of primarily civil servants and some contractors.
Those system took even longer to develop and were often scrapped!
The only difference between now and then is that the media likes to get hold of the stories now, so we all know about it.

And not all IT systems have been a disaster! The Passport system was in on time and within budget from what I can remember.
RPA system is pretty cool (Accenture). MOD is going live soon, as is the Prison Service I believe.
DEFRA is going in on time I'm sorry to report (wanted an extension) - dont know about the budget like.
And they're only the ones I've either worked on or know a bit about.

Dont believe all the hype ffs.

Oh, and the government isn't in AWE of the likes of EDS, they are in NEED of them. The tories sold out the IT civil service staff to EDS. Sorry not sold out, outsourced. Thats the word.

You are a champagne socialist Sally Anne, one of only two/three types of person voting for NL.
              Another is/was..

              - Mondeo man, blue collar worker type, lives in some not bad but not good area e.g. Essex, doing fairly well for himself, despised the worst of Old Labour.

The underclass - maybe some do vote labour, but they have less in common with the working man than an upper class aristocrat.

Let's think what the Labour party was, the betterment of the working man. I.e. help out those who want to work:

              How bastardised has that become?

              Now they are supported by
1/ those who don't want to work
2/ those who have money but are on a nostalgia trip
3/ those who were fed up of the Tories and made a mistake

Those who want to better themselves look elsewhere
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

S-A, the govt is in a sort of begrudging awe of contractors, because they never seem to learn from their own mistakes (this was my experience at first hand with the Cabinet Office). Why is that? Oh I remember; when the negotiations get sticky, the civil servants wheel out some crusty old mandarin to shout at (as against negotiate with) the contractor. The contractor puts the commercial lawyer into bat. Result: lamb to slaughter.

So because it started under the last government it's ok to continue this! The use of consultancies has rocketed under this lot. NL have been running the show for 10 years - You can't really use the failings of a government from 10 years ago to justify the crock of sh1t we are saddled with.

They shared with NL the idea that the consultancies were a good thing. The only reason the Tories sold out to EDS was that Andersen had been banned by Thatcher for failing to prevent the DeLorean fiasco (they were the accountants).

When Labour got in they naturally opted for a New Beginning and outsourced to Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) instead.

Labour minister Patricia Hewitt used to be an Accenture director.
God made men. Sam Colt made them equal.

You have to remember one thing though, so intent are this lot on forcing through unpopular ideas, that they are about to foist the most boring uncharasmatic disaster upon us. Unlike all other feedback warnings that they have ignored this one will be disasterous (for them)
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.
