Police have launched an urgent manhunt for a second asylum-seeking prisoner mistakenly freed, two days after the justice secretary, David Lammy, brought in stronger checks for jails.

The 24-year-old Algerian was wrongly released from Wandsworth prison in south London last Wednesday, with the Metropolitan police only informed this week.

The Guardian understands that the man was in prison for trespass with intent to steal.

When I was a kid I was told it was safer to live next to a prison because when someone escaped they would go far away.


Anyway Wandsworth was the prison that guy, who though the could play spy games, hid under a lorry to escape....

Listening to Radio 4 this morning, it would seem that accidental releases are quite common and the rate has gone up over the past year because 'reasons'.

When I was a kid I was told it was safer to live next to a prison because when someone escaped they would go far away.

And that is true. Same can be said for living in some rough areas (or it used to be). I moved in to Lower Broughton Salford decades ago not realising what the area was like. Only a week after moving in the Staff of Life pub (about 200 yards away) was on the Roger Cook Report about the Salford ganglands. Found out later Dominic Noonan lived round the corner and was the time the highest car theft rate in the country was Salford area.
Turns out the close you are to the action the safer it was as the bosses frown on the minions creating havoc on their own door step. Wasn't without problems from the general scroats but the theft, break ins with the 1/2 sq mile were considerable lower than the radius outside it.
Apparently the worst place to be was about a 20 minute walk out of Lower Broughton while carrying a 60" TV!
