I know that there's a certain flippancy here, but those I know in receipt of PIP have genuine long-term medical conditions that impact day-to-day life. I'd not want PIP in return for not being able to walk to the local shops.Originally posted by Funhouse View PostI am getting very anxious about the budget - where can I sign up for PIP?Comment

My wife's rheumatoid arthritis means she can't walk to the local shops about 500 yards away. Should the state be paying her as a result? What would she be paid for, exactly - free taxis?Originally posted by Protagoras View Post

Yes, many people need support for such tings, that's not in dispute. But there seem to be an awful lot of edge cases these days.Blog? What blog...?

The "Pips Squeak" budget put it up to 35% apparently, and "luxury VAT" from 8% to 25%.Originally posted by Andy2022 View PostI can remember the basic rate of income tax being at 33%
Which we thought was extortionate: except VAT gradually crept up to 20% on almost everything since.
Ah, dear dead days beyond recall.

Pay-per-mile appears to be on the cards for EVs to cover the back fuel duty gap that's been created. I would expect fuel duty to increase as well for the fossil fuel variety.

Salary sacrifice potentially reduced to £2k before NI hits, so umbrella employees hammered again.Comment

I saw an item in the FT about this.Originally posted by jamesbrown View PostSalary sacrifice potentially reduced to £2k before NI hits, so umbrella employees hammered again.
AFAIU, there's no limit to pension contributions that can be made by an employer.
So what would stop an employer (including an umbrella company) having a range of pension schemes with 10%, 20%, 30% etc employer contributions so that no actual 'salary sacrifice' would become necessary?
It's not immediately clear to me how this might work in practice.Last edited by Protagoras; 8 November 2025, 00:19.Comment

The main snag is that these contributions would be a percentage of your gross salary, so you'd still be paying employer's NI (and apprenticeship levy) based on that figure. It might still be worthwhile, but I'd need to do some sums after the final rules are published.Originally posted by Protagoras View PostSo what would stop an employer (including an umbrella company) having a range of pension schemes with 10%, 20%, 30% etc employer contributions so that no actual 'salary sacrifice' would become necessary?Comment
