Ridiculous. Why should today's UK citizens pay for what happened over 200 years ago? Not as if the ancestors of most of us were involved or benefited. A significant number of today's citizens have an African or other colonial heritage and the ancestors of most white British people did not benefit from slavery, most were labourers who worked in appalling conditions not much better than the slaves did. Also, some Africans today have ancestors who were complicit in the trade, selling captured members of other tribes. Then there's the fact that some of African origins are rather better off in the US and the Carribean than they would be in poorer African countries.bloggoth
