Your age? (That's probably the biggest factor affecting premiums.)

Annual mileage has a bearing too. (I seem to recall LM doesn't use the car that much, so maybe she has declared a low annual mileage.)

My declared annual mileage is 5k and I usually do less than that. Although, I do need to revisit that as I'm now driving about 150 miles most weekends to see my Mum.

Make/model of car, age of car, job title and where you/others in the area generally park. (Drives and car parks aren't safer where I am.)

Loads of people around me have EVs so according to complaints are paying over £1500+ for insurance. There are a few other petrol/diesel models that are regularly stolen.

Oh smaller cars aren't exempt from theft as they are being stolen for parts

Who knows how car insurance works sometimes.

My wife's renewal quote was up 40% on last year. I used the insurance Compare+ tool on the MoneySavingExpert site yesterday, only 3 days before current expiry which in theory should have meant it was more expensive.

Got a policy from Tesco (who she used to be with a few years ago) for just 4% up on last year's cost.

Ironically, my renewal quite from Tesco is up 53%!

Perhaps your wife was in a category of people Tesco needed at that time to 'balance' their book? Similar to how banks do it with their loans? It does seem a crap shoot. I remember one year my insurance dropped from £400 to £220 and then went up to £350 the next year and now hovered around £350-400 for years.

I've had almost exactly the same recently. Every annual renewal quote for years, irrespective of company, has been anywhere from c. 10-50% higher.

Last year my renewal was around 40% lower. First time ever I didn't bother to get any other quotes.

9 out 10 times ringing my current insurer up gets me the best deal, maybe £10-20 in it, not worth faffing around moving. It's shocking how they still get away with not offering the best deal on renewal. It can't be that hard for regulator to check.

Don't forget also that insurance companies have a preferred group of people that match their risk model and costing. It's the reason LV, who prefer older, safer drivers with lower premiums will quote a 30 year old in a sporty car 5k+ or not even quote yet a specialist like AIB will come in at rates not for off the old fell and his diesel Focus. Sheila's wheels was a great example, but obviously now illegal.
I am sure many of us have been with a company that suddenly inflated prices and you've had to leave to go find someone else. It's because they've moved their risk factor and you've fallen out of their preferred demographic.

In the old days if you'd had a notable increase then you'd just go shopping and you'd find an equivalent or even better rate. Not so effective with the current price rises as it's just generally across the board rather than moving demographics.

Not sure how ladymucks insurance has gone down and up but still stayed in the same roughly the same for all these years. Her insurance must target hotties with cool cars.

It's in line with what everyone is saying on here so that's just an across the board increase we are all being hit with and nothing to do with aspects your insurance.
