The world's top chess federation has sparked a furious sexism row after banning trans women from competing in all-female contests while it decides whether they have an unfair advantage.

The new rules from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) state that any player who has transitioned from male to female 'has no right to participate in official FIDE events for women' until further analysis, which could take up to two years, is made.

The decision, which was published on Monday and will come into effect on August 21, has drawn criticism from supporters of trans rights who have branded the move as 'pure bigotry and persecution', while others called it 'offensive to women'.

Sorry that is bizarre, Trans women have no inherent advantage and are unlikely to get their bits out in the changing room after a strenuous matches.

Not bizarre when one understands the chronic underrepresentation of women in elite chess. The separate category is in place to ensure that women have the opportunity to compete within their own sex class without that class of competition being overwhelmed by men.

It's not an anti-[ gay | trans | men ] position; it's pro-woman.

My experience with Gay & Trans they are normally pretty respectful of biological women.

Yes, you are correct... but, it's not about the number trans-identifying people in women's sport -- though it could be argued that even one male competitor takes away a place that should have rightly gone to a female -- it is about mediocre male competitors using the cover of "trans" to gain entry into the female category in order to claim the prize money that is available in that category.

This is a wider problem that chess, but they all share a common theme: a harbour for less than successful male competitors.

ok I will bite there is no physical advantage, chess is purely mental so why would being biologically male make any difference?

I agree some 'trans' people are abusing it to use their male strength to win in female competitions. But thinking that apparently makes me a Terf or similar.

You are correct: there is no physical advantage. The specific case of the ICF guidance is to support representation: that women, and in particular girls, can SEE women competing and winning in elite events for their sex class. Allowing men to also compete in these event would dilute the 'representation' value of an all female competition in promoting chess to an underrepresented group.

It is, if you like, optics. and the promotion of the sport to a particular audience.

Testosterone regulates many functions in the body, including brain functions such as memory.

Men also have 10% larger brains than women, that maybe another advantage when it comes to playing chess at top level.

So men may well have a biological advantage when it comes to chess. The stats are only 37 women grandmasters out of a total of 1600 in the world.
