My phone is permanently on silent as I don't answer calls on it and don't want to listen to annoying jingles when playing and adverts when browsing Do these alerts override the volume setting?

More info here for thems that are concerned

Interesting that they only work with certain mobile OS's which contradicts my belief that it shouldn't matter what type of phone you have. I thought it was network dependent rather than phone type.

      EDIT: and more here

I always thought too.. functionality is there apparently.. (from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Emergency_Alert_System)

The alerts will only be available on devices that connect to the UK's 4G and 5G networks, and not 2G or 3G,[15]despite Cell Broadcast being part of the GSM specification since before 2G adoption was widespread in the UK.
