How the hell does that job justify being paid £1.35 million a year?

Surely the point is that the idiot Lineker has diluted his value by being a sanctimonious prat while ignoring his connection to the BBC?

          According to The Guardian:

The BBC does not have the rights to use the Premier League’s global commentary feed, the Athletic reports.

After contributors from across the BBC’s sports coverage withdrew their services in solidarity with Lineker, the corporation announced that Match of the Day would air without presenters or pundits and would instead “focus on match action”.

It had been speculated that the BBC intended to use the commentary feed provided by the Premier League for broadcasters outside the UK.

The Athletic says its lack of rights for the feed means the BBC “must now decide whether to air Saturday’s episode with no accompanying commentary or analysis”.

            I think it's funny.

Instead of trying to kill the story the Beeb are making it worse.

Getting fed up with all this suppression of speech. Don't agree with Linker, can't stand the bloke, but people should be able to say whatever they want as long as it does not intentionally promote hatred.

There are some roles where people really need to publicly remain unbiased, if he was chairing a political debate on the BBC for example, but why does it matter what a sports commentator thinks off air?

It's the same reason why it matters to anyone with an employer or client - it may have an impact on prospects or income if it offends the policies of the engager.

The independently wealthy who don't need income from stakeholders can afford free speech; for others the price may be too high.
