EU corruption charges 'could be one of the biggest scandals ever to hit European Parliament': Socialist vice president who defended Qatar is among four charged over 'bags of cash' found at home
    • Eva Kaili, 44, was charged with corruption after bags of cash found in her home
    • The Greek socialist previously defended Qatar and was arrested on Friday
    • The arrests followed raids in Brussels which turned up 600,000 euros in cash
    • Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, said the news was 'very worrisome'
Blimey the Beeb are reporting on it must be bad!

European Parliament Vice President Eva Kaili has been arrested in an investigation into suspected bribery by a Gulf state.

Belgian prosecutors believe the unnamed country tried to influence the parliament with money or other gifts.

Four others were also arrested, according to the AFP news agency.

Local media suggested the Gulf state in question was Qatar - but a Qatari spokesperson said he was unaware of any investigation, and denied misconduct.

Ms Kaili, a lawmaker at the European Parliament and one of its 14 elected vice presidents, has been suspended from the parliament's Socialists and Democrats Group and expelled from the Greek centre-left Pasok party.

In a statement, the Socialists and Democrats Group said it had "zero tolerance" for corruption, and would support the investigation.

Cash worth about €600,000 ($632,000; £515,000) was seized by Belgian police in 16 searches in Brussels on Friday. Computers and mobile phones were also taken by police in order to examine their contents.

Blimey, I always figured there would be lots of back scratching going on at that level. There is anywhere st the levels of power be it business, sport, politics whathave you. The legal term is 'lobbying' isn't it? It's appears just to be part of what doing business is but I didn't know they were still handing out sacks of cash in this day and age. I thought it would be stays on their yachtsn, massive hospitality perks, business favours etc. I am absolutely sure it's just me being naive but I thought outright payments, and particularly in cash we just a bit old school and not done so much today.

They must have had some good intel to get a warrant to do that so must be a really murkey world they are investigating. I'd loved to see how the investigation worked, how they got the info, who's involved etc. Would make for a good crime drama that.

Guess I am going to have to wait until the dail mail gets hold of it to get some glamourous pictures and find out how much her house is worth.

EU and any country should charge their politicians with corruption. But how many British politicians have been charged despite them obviously being corrupt?

I heard more about the story today.

I thought it was very interesting what countries those officials came from.
