I have to congratulate them it probably costs them to do that but it may allow them to more easily ban regular shoplifters.

Got a relative who works in a supermarket.
To me a lot of people don't pay for the bags, don't scan them on the self checkouts, and most staff cant be arsed to challenge it.
Same for lots of shop lifting at the self scan checkouts during peak times.. staff don't bother unless its blatant, not like they get a bonus for challenging shop lifters or people who don't pay for bags.

Even if you have no bags, the end message at the self-service till says, don't forget to take your bags.

The best shop for shop lifting in my area use to be the local Co-op as the staff did shifts there around the other local supermarkets that paid better. \People would walk out of large boxes of beer even though they were the furthest from the door. Now there is no point shop lifting as the shelves are hardly ever full. The funny thing is at the same time as not having full shelves they have implemented more measures to deter shop lifters.

Absolutely this. Exactly what happens any the Coop a couple of doors down from us. All the steaks are in the plastic tote box things for example. No idea why they think that is going to deter a theif but the fact they are so big I guess it means it takes more space up in the basket they are going to run out with. The annoying thing is there are rarely more than 6 steaks of varying types in so getting three the same for the family is nigh on impossible in our local Coop.

Speaking to them, which we have to as our CCTV covers the road out so we are forever providing it to the police. Meat and spirits are the choice items and they don't have much trouble with beer due to the size and price of it.

There are some university students around my way. So I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were the beer thieves, after all why would you steal sandwich and crisps?

(Yes I know it is from a different supermarket but they are about 7 minutes walking distance from each other.)

I'm in London and there is a police station not too far away. When the Met want a break they just wander in.....

Supermarket trolleys are still very good value at £1 each, and you can go back and get as many new ones as you like.
