Pretty sure there was a documentary on telly last year about it, mostly US but I think some UK cases, my understanding of it was that stapling was only really a sensible option if your weight meant you were going to snuff it or end up housebound. Lots of people had paid for the surgery as a short term fix in the States but it needed long term monitoring and often follow up surgery and they didn't have the money for this and had been left in a mess. It could of been a Panorama job but ?

I am self indulgent - thats exactly the right term to describe it. I dont know why i am, and I dont know why other people aren't, or why I am more than others. But yes, thats exactly what I am. Thanks for that.
Why is it if a person doesn't love themselves they have self esteem issues, yet if they do everyones all "yeah, you love yourself you!" Make your mind up John!Comment

Originally posted by DennySA, go and have a medical check up and find out if you have a sluggish thyroid. That may explain why you are putting on so much weight. You also need to check what your BMI is to ensure that you are not storing up diabetes and a whole raft of other medical problems associated with being more than your ideal body weight.
I am not going to go into the psychological aspect of over-eating because it seems to me that your weight is more genetic than down to some sort of bulimia or deep rooted self-esteem issues. It also seems to me that you have a healthy attitude to weight because you are not obsessed by being slim and model-like. I think that is to be applauded.
To help you stop over-eating:
I would suggest that you write a list of those foods that you typically eat in a week that are highly calorific and cross off all of those from your diet you could easily do without and wouldn't miss much either. Cut those out completely.
Then single out those that you could eat less of but couldn't do without completely because you enjoy them too much and it would seem to much of a sacrifice to give up. Make it a rule to cut down on these - either by smaller portions or by eating the same portions fewer times per week or even switching to a less calorific version of the same.
Make sure you have breakfast - a healthy bowl of no sugar added muesli with skimmed milk would be ideal or a glass of fruit juice. Don't just drink coffee as you will be tempted to eat biscuits around mid-morning or fill up on a bagel on the way in to work.
Examine your cooking habits - do you grill instead of fry? A grilled sausage tastes just as good but has fewer calories than a fried one. Do you trim the fat off bacon and eat poached eggs instead of creamy scrambled or fried eggs? Try and make your own food, if you have time, so that you can monitor how much fat and salt goes into your diet. Often convenience foods are laden with fats and salts which all boost weight unnecessarily.
Then examine the amount of exercise you do take. Do you walk fast or slowly? Do you use the car on sunny days when walking would be just as easy and you're not in a hurry? Do you climb the stairs at work to get to the first and second floors instead of getting the lift? You don't have to do a punishing fitness regime in the gym if you hate it. Just weave some calory burning activity into your everyday activities. In fact, I would advise against launching into a punishing fitness regime or weight training if your doctor feels you could damage yourself by doing so.
Do you drink plenty of water? Thirst is often mistaken for hunger and you may find that by drinking more water you will make you feel less hungry and you can cut out those biscuit breaks or forgo that bag of crisps.
Just these steps alone with surely impact on your weight and without any real sacrifice on your part. You can still enjoy all your favourite foods by just cutting out the excess fats and salts in your diet and by drinking more water. You won't feel you are on any kind of diet at all because you will still be eating all your favourite foods but just more efficiently. Give it six months and see how you go. I bet you drop a dress size just by doing these things.
No need for stapling, ex army sergeant fitness trainers, boring hours on a treadmill at an overpriced gym staring at gay men and skinny girls or ghastly low calorie weighwatchers convenience foods or a tiresome salad for dinner every night - and no slimming pills or drinks either.
I would also examine your alcohol intake. Drink is laden with calories - particularly beer and fortified wines like Sherry, Port and liquers. Can you do without some of the booze you normally consume? Can you swap a normal G&T for one with slimline tonic instead or cut out that extra pint and drink the one you have more slowly. If so, do it as you will help yourself here too.
Try all of this and see.
The thing about the list of all the food I normaly eat, and seeing what I can cross off - that is a really clever, intelligent idea.
Diets fail because they're new routines, but modifying my own routine (taking out the crap that I can do without) is a really smart plan.
I've actually copied and pasted what you've said into notepad (yes notepad) to keep.
Thank you very very much. The pope is a tard.Comment

She had the second op just before Xmas, almost 2 years after the initial one. She had been very lucky with the initial staple - she had the "rubber band" type operation and suffered no side effects afterwards. The weight just fell off. After her op she had to drink loads of milk to get enough calories but after a while her stomach expanded slightly so she could manage normal food, just smaller portions. As I said though, she was lucky and a lot of people have problems afterwards. The pope is a tard.Comment
