Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at the AA, said: “Though well intended, moving the yearly £55 spend on an MOT to every two years could make costs worse for drivers with higher repair bills, make our roads more dangerous and would put jobs in the garage industry at risk.”
36% of cars fail first time currently!

The 10 areas listed in that link are so generic it covers everything I can think of. What would 11 - 20 be?

No just the most safety critical: Tyres, Lights, brakes, suspension, steering, structure.

I have had a suspension spring worked fine but had a small crack, brake pad thickness, corroded brake lines (under the fuel tank) and a sticking rear seatbelt (some muck had dropped in the belt drum). Failed emissions once saved by redex! Bangernomics are fun.

quite a few things are checked

For example I just paid out £600 for a failed airbag ECU, and associated warning light , which is an instant MOT fail
