    So Twitter…

Richest man in the world borrows $25bn to stop people being mean to him on the platform.

I wonder if the pledge to authenticate every human on the platform has any ulterior motive and Musk reckons even more personal data will be available but given the talk of mass exodus of “sane” users and the return of Trump and MTG it’s going to be a hot mess very soon!

I got banned for jokingly threatening to punch a friend of mine if he turned up to my BBQ with his usual four cans of Carling.

Some do-gooder out there didn't like it and reported me.

I wonder if my account will be re-instated? Twitter is actually quite useful for live sports updates etc.

He tweeted saying he wants people to be mean to him, that's part of the point.
He has also said he doesn't really care about the financial side of things, which is possibly a good thing in terms of making it better - every effort to commercialise it makes the product worse.

If you are a 'sane' user it's really very easy to avoid the 'crazy' ones (Trump said he won't be returning btw) because the whole point of Twitter is everyone is in their own little bubble.

Elon IS very smart and I think genuinely operates quite idealistically on some issues but it's a big challenge. Free speech doesn't mean you can say literally anything, neither does it imply zero moderation. And since Twitter operates (nearly) worldwide there's all sorts of legality issues. But zealots will call it censorship if they can't talk about "n*****s ruining America".

Twitter is a publishing platform and if there are laws in other legal jurisdictions on what users of the platform can and can't write it doesn't matter what he allows as it won't be legal where the user is.

Very true, but they've been in the news of late for making their own decisions what is/isn't OK which tends to align with their own stance and go beyond legal requirements. In effect, like being on an internet forum where moderators are all-powerful and unaccountable. On a forum or if you're moderating your own YouTube channel that is absolutely fine - your house your rules - but Elon's argument is Twitter is the defacto 'town square' and shouldn't be influenced unduly.

But how you remain 'hands off' and avoid simply replacing the current bias with your own requires a huge amount of will-power, one imagines. And Elon really likes to be hands-on with his companies.

The Greeks had a word for it, now what was it? Oh yes: hubris.

He needs someone whispering in his shelllike "You are only a man".
