For those of you with kids looking to go to uni

I would have worked a lot harder if I had any idea what I wanted to do.

That's the thing. Kids of that age have no clue of what they want to do.

Could I go back in time I probably wouldn't bother with university until I am say 23-24 years old. And this is what I'm going to do with my kids: surely I won't force them to go straight into uni. Just take a break, travel for a bit, see what's out there and then go to uni if you want to when you want to.

I was thinking that the other day, if only because I reckon it's fascinating. But then I'm not sure I'd enjoy all the crap (literally and figuratively) that comes with it. Been watching the BBC "This is going to hurt" version of the same-titled book. Sure takes the glamour out of it, reminds me a bit of "All Creatures Great & Small" (some of my favourite books of all time)

Before you know it, the compulsory "school leaving" age will be 21!

It's a long 7 or 8 years just to impress ladies (or gents), when "yes that is my Ferrari" would work as least as well.

Whereas 'I'm a software developer for fighter jets' has done the trick for me.

( In fact during my recent illnesses, most of the Docs and Nurses were also quite impressed, and one particularly hot care assistant)

I was clueless at age 18, and largely wasted my time at university unfortunately. Get some real work experience under your belt first, and then decide if you could benefit from higher education.

I had no clue what to do on leaving college and nothing at university appealed enough to "be poor for 3+ years" as I saw it.

So I got a job as an Accounts Junior and ultimately ended up where I am now. I don't feel I lost out because of it; it's one of those sliding doors* things where it would be interesting to know whether I'd be in the same place if I had gone to university.
