Downing Street staff held 'wine-time Fridays' throughout the pandemic with Boris Johnson regularly witnessing the gatherings.

Sources told the Mirror that the Prime Minister encouraged aides to “let off steam” despite indoor socialising being banned under lockdown rules.

The regular event was so popular that staff even invested in a £142 drinks fridge to keep their bottles of white wine, Prosecco and beer cool.

Reports that staff took a suitcase to a supermarket to stock up on booze ahead of a party on the eve of Prince Philip ’s funeral were not a one-off.

Sources claimed that aides took turns on Fridays to visit the local Tesco Metro in Westminster with a wheely suitcase to fill up the 34-bottle capacity fridge.

One senior MP described how on Friday, during a standard school visit, he was asked by a group of nine-year-olds whether or not the prime minister was going to resign, and then was catcalled by teenage pupils about Boris Johnson's behaviour.

In reality, it was a non-event. This whole nonsense is being used to unseat Boris, it's not going to work. And don't tell me nobody knew of these events when they happened.

The BBC isn't exactly helping. Headline news today is an unanimous vote by leading Tories that he should resign. Turns out these leading Tories are the local party team in Sutton Coldfield... excluding the sitting MP.

Meanwhile we have the best economic recovery in the G7, driven by well over 90% vaccination levels, minimal restrictions on public life and reducing hospitalisations and isolations (the latter still too long of course, should be isolate while positive if at all). So clearly whatever this clearly dysfunctional government is doing it's not working. Or something. It would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

And there are now reports that Starmer has attended similar par, ermm, events during lockdown.

And the only one? I rather doubt that...

30 people in an open space at their place of work and who are already in close contact with each other? Well yes, I can see it is by far the most important "party" of the last two years. At least it is if you r entire focus is on scoring silly little political points in the hop of becoming something important. Forgive me if I yawn.

I can understand the argument that it's fine for work colleagues to socialise together without increasing their risk. (I don't agree with it, but I can understand it.) I also think that the "nation in mourning" aspect is exaggerated; Prince Philip's death had no real effect on me.

However, I think there are 2 bigger concerns here:

1. Johnson said in Parliament that the guidance had been followed at all times. If he was lying, the ministerial code says that he should resign. Do you (malvolio) agree with that, or does it only apply to certain lies?

2. Think about the vigil for Sarah Everard, where women were mourning a woman who was raped and murdered by a police officer, then the police went in and arrested them. The only justification for that is to say "The virus doesn't care why you're here, and the rules apply to everyone, so we have to enforce them without fear or favour." That doesn't square with the police turning a blind eye to a garden party at Downing Street: either they were unaware of it (which is rather worrying from a security perspective) or they deliberately ignored it.

If the rules were good enough to get Ferguson fired for visting his lover then they should be good enough to fire Boris the Liar and all people who attended those parties.

Can't see him resigning though, the man is honourless liar and will do anything to stay in power.
