    My home t̶o̶w̶n̶ city?!

Tiny town, Marazion, bids to become UK's smallest city

A top story on the BBC today. I grew up about half a mile inland and own a flat just round the corner behind the phone box. Could it soon be a swanky city apartment?

Tamsin Woodhead, who runs Morva Marazion gift shop in the town, said applying for city status was a "fun idea" which would bring more visitors year round.
Fun idea? If the system allows 'fun ideas' to pass then the whole thing is broken. There should be some criteria and if you meet them you pass, if you don't you don't. Having an arbitrary process that just allows people to apply for fun with no tangible points makes the whole thing pointless surely.

They talk about a cathedral but that doesn't even matter. They got rid of that requirement in 1889 didn't they?

The last list for city status seems to be

    A minimum population of 300,000
    A record of good local government;
    A “local metropolitan character”.
But it appears the last 24 towns granted city status did meet them. What's the point.

The whole thing is so broken seems a bit pointless.

If Southend can become a city then anywhere can.

We don't get many shootings in Cornwall, and that's the only way Marazion is going to get citified.

I think they should rename it to "Marzipan". I've always thought about marzipan for some reason every time I've passed through it on the train. It can be the marzipan city.

People even in Cornwall can't agree how to pronounce the current spelling, I don't think they'll want to change it.

Most say Mara-zi-on to rhyme with Para but some insist on Mar-azion a bit like Meridien

If it doesn't have a red-light district and a serious drug problem, you've got no chance. Just saying...

We don't get many shootings in Southend but the region is very stabby at the moment.

The many films loosely based on The Essex Boys Range Rover murders have unfairly stereotyped everyone from South Essex as ultra violent criminals.

In reality most are involved in questionable direct sales or Forex trading schemes.

I'd say the closest thing to red light district would be the traffic lights, except there aren't any.
