To answer my own question: the WHO worked out that calling the new variant "the Nu variant" might be a bit confusing, at least for English speakers, so they dumped Nu in favour of Omicron

Of course, "The Omicron Variant" has the further advantage of sounding like a thriller about a stolen antimatter device

First European case of B.1.1.529 variant identified in Belgium A first case in Europe of the new variant of Covid-19 has been identified in Belgium in an unvaccinated young adult woman who developed mild flu-like symptoms 11 days after traveling to Egypt via Turkey.

The patient did not report any links with South Africa or other countries in southern Africa. None of her family members have developed symptoms. The patient was said to have a high viral load at the time of diagnosis by researchers at the universities, KU Leuven and UZ Leuven.

There are several people infected in Israel, Netherlands, and Belgium. There was a female passenger from SA on KLM who was allowed to fly unvaccinated. During the flight she was coughing three times a minute; she said she had been like that three days prior to the flight. Potentially there is over 200 infected on that flight.

Two people in the UK have been found to be infected with the new Covid variant, Omicron, the health secretary has said.



Sajid Javid said the UK Health Security Agency had detected cases in Chelmsford, Essex, and in Nottingham.



He said the cases were linked to travel in southern Africa and they and their households were self-isolating as more tests and contact tracing take place.



The new variant has also been identified in South Africa, Botswana, Belgium, Hong Kong and Israel.



Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be holding a press conference at Downing Street later with the chief scientific advisor to the government, Sir Patrick Vallance, and the UK's chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty.

If you care to check, there have been alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta, iota, kappa, lambda and mu variants. The one after nu is xi, followed by omicron, pi, rho, sigma, tau, upsilon, phi, chi, psi and omega.

I've just come back from Nottingham! I did do a test this morning before meeting friends for lunch but it's probably a bit soon for me to have sufficient load to be detectable.
