There is enough difference between aspects of their features to make race not a direct issue IMO. Bloke is an idiot, he's not a racist in the same way the twitter trolls and other vile people are.

A better example of two broadly similar people would be the gaffe in the Irish news where they mixed Stormzy and Lukaku up. Both looked very similar at the time. Is that racist? It's rude and embarrassing for sure but does it make anyone a racist?

It's a well documented thing called Own-Race Bias. The title tells you most of what you need to know about that but it proves it exists, across the world and across races. Obviously happens more in societies that aren't as multicultural but the following report uses Malaysia as a test subject due to it's diversity and opportunities to be spend time with many more people of a different race. Even there ORB existed. So if it's a fundamental failing of all humans regardless of the diversity around them then it can't be racist in the terms people are using here.

It's not an excuse I get that. Every time it happens it will always be an uproar for sure. Peoples feelings will be hurt and whoever made the mistake is gonna have to do some soul searching and improve but if it's a documented behaviour as the report suggests then we are never ever going to get away from it.

Maybe it's just me being touchy about the term racist. To me a racist is someone that posts vile tweets, has a very obvious bias and all that. People make mistakes based on race doesn't put them in the same camp as the former. Maybe it's just misunderstanding of the term that gets me hot under the collar.
The point I was making was that the commenters have made a decision he is racist because of the skin colour the people he confused a very clear example of racist thinking. As you say its more likely to be stupidity!

To bring race in to it just isn't needed IMO.

To get called a racist by mixing two people up because they are black is just going to far. Country is utterly ****ed.
I wouldn't know which one was which either if they weren't wearing their kit, since I don't watch football or rugby outside major tournaments.
However did he have an entire interview with one and think it was t'other, and nobody corrected him?

I don't think that is the case as it's not clear in the text. He says they've met over Zoom so I read in to it he's met Rashford previously, knew it was him and engaged. I mean, can you even use Zoom anymore? Which would indicate it's historic. What the article says further down is..

He said: "Towards the end of a wide-ranging interview in which I talked about both the laptops and school meals campaigns, I conflated the issues and made a genuine mistake.
So he's in a completely separate interview, nothing to do with actually talking to Rashford and mixed up which one was championing laptops and which one is championing school meals. Nothing more. The interview with rashford is a red herring but it's been cleverly disguised in the article.

Happy to be proven wrong but that's how I read it.

Sounds about on a level with a band on tour saying the wrong name when they say "Hello <town>" to me, the number of people he has to meet must be more than the One Show presenters!

This is because AI is controlled by white people, who are racists. Racist white people creating racist machines. Time to ban AI outright before it creates a new virtual Hitler.
