    Don't Stockpile

And yes this is less linked to IR35 reform. They could cope with the low pay while they were outside now they are all inside the foreign ones have left to go work elsewhere.

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...ing-conditions

Lorry drivers are planning a nationwide strike over their working conditions, prompting warnings that this would magnify food shortages and cripple the country’s already creaking supply chains.
Hauliers are proposing a “stay at home” day next month in response to low pay and working terms, an event designed to compound the effect of the UK’s lorry-driver shortage , which last week led to widespread stock shortages. However the Road Haulage Association, which represents commercial road haulage companies and has more than 7,000 members, warned drivers against taking action saying it would make a “bad situation worse” and severely disrupt automated chains.

So far the “stay at home” action on 23 August has attracted nearly 3,000 HGV drivers with another 340 joining last week. Lorry driver Mark Schubert said: “For far too many years we have been ignored, exploited and taken for granted. Now our time has come, now we have a window of opportunity to be listened to.”

They need to go legit 'self employed', by this i mean own their own lorry.

Relative has done this recently, absolutely minting it at the moment. Regrets he didn't do it sooner.

        Amazon use an auction process.

They offer a load for delivery at a low starting price say a week ahead. As the deadline approaches they increase the price until a lorry firm bites and clicks the button accepting the load.

Because there is a shortage, the price can go really high as amazon gets desperate to find a lorry to deliver the load.

He is going to love that strike day if it happens. Loads are going to be offered out even higher on that day.

the gov should offer loans for people to become self employed and buy their own vehicle. if they would make it as easy as it is to get a student loan I bet people will fight for it.

Who pays for their expensive training?

Hint - it ain't the employers....

Based on that link 'Trampers' get the highest rates, up to £25 an hour by the looks of things.

Trampers are drivers who are happy to sleep in the lorry overnight far from home

I don't think the time you sleep is paid just the hours you drive.

I don't know about providing loans but possibly providing (or even just partnering/encouraging private sector to do so) a loan insurance product.
