"UK facing summer of food shortages due to lack of lorry drivers

Loss of 100,000 hauliers due to Covid and Brexit will cause food ‘rolling power cuts’, experts warn

The country is facing a summer of food shortages likened to a series of “rolling power cuts” because of a loss of 100,000 lorry drivers due to Covid and Brexit, industry chiefs have warned.

In a letter to Boris Johnson they have called for an urgent intervention to allow eastern European drivers back into the country on special visas, similar to those issued to farm pickers, warning that there is a “crisis” in the supply chain.

They have said shortages of workers in warehouses and food processing centres are also having an impact with packing food for supermarket shelves."

1.5 million still on furlough, its not like the lack of drivers wasn't predicted. Maybe the hauliers should have planned?

5 years ago large organisations were bemoaning the fact they were losing their cheap labour in town hall meetings. They knew they chose not to plan.

Class 1 courses take 3-5 days and cost £1500. Its not like they need to have a shortage for long!

Oh sorry training is a dirty word. I have no sympathy.

Maybe if they pay above minimum wages they might have some takers?

Great thinking - let's get 100k new HGV drivers on the road who hate their new job and only had 5 days course.

        What can possibly go wrong?

How many people did your business employ other than yourself, your missus and your local mailman?

My employers in the last 5 years?

                  100,000 / 5,000 / 500.

First two had supped deep at the altar of cheap eastern Europeans! It was the only issue they raised over brexit.

Current employer has about 10 Eastern Europeans and its obvious they are there on merit!

No, how many people did you (your business) employed, you (don't) know - build a business where you actually pay external (non-family) people money as part of business, is that 0?

I am going to compliment you by saying that you are clearly a very hard working person to survive such tough competition.

Well for the hard of thinking I have been a permie for 17 years. Thought you might have noticed. I don't employ squirrels to tend to my needs.

I worked at a fairly high level for a fortune 500 company when the brexit vote was returned, when planning for brexit was discussed their only concern was that they would lose their cheap labour. Shipping & standards weren't really mentioned. No plan to mitigate.

Again for a medium size organisation 4 years ago all of their factory floor workers had morphed to Eastern Europeans. Again their worry was losing cheap labour. No plan to mitigate.

Finally for a smaller organisation for two years who have had a significant turnover due to Brexit but have assisted them with getting residence and back filling with juniors to train up.

3 different organisations that recognised the challenge long ago and two who just whined about it. I can see the hauliers are in the whine about it camp.

Hardly competition to me my stuff is very niche but its nice to work with people who actually use their brain.
