When I worked in the States (as a permie) - I always turned up at the clients site in a shirt and tie. Not a suit but smart. The VP of Ops had a thing against this and complained that I wore a tie - the jerk even made a point of mentioning it to me in front of everyone in a meeting. I told him that in a country of "free speech" I should be alllowed to express myself in my own way and that unless he could find a clause in the constitution disallowing it I would continue to wear it. He shut after that!
Admittedly I had to ensure I kept my ducks in a row after that encounter but it was near the end of the project anyway!!
