How much have the Italians contributed towards understanding the genetic makeup of the virus and how it's changing?

Very good point. Only Denmark and the UK, in Europe, have setup these higher capacity labs. It is statistically more likely that these labs will detect new covid19 variants, as they are testing significantly more for them in the first place. The Italian professor's comments are stupid.

What I love on this forum is that we have plenty of local talent who can firmly put Italian professor (virus expert) in his place.

I feel a lot safer already.

Just reading a document and quoting to suit my agenda, like everyone else...

The leading epidemiologists have stated the same as I did a few posts back. That's who I take guidance from. There are numerous mutations of covid19, how is it possible to tell what the virulence or illness severity is from just discovering a new strain? The epidemiologists say that it takes at least one to three months to know, as more samples are collected and analysed. When someone has a PCR test the sample requires to be examined by another more complex process. All the PCR samples taken are not entered into this process.

Everything takes time, which seems to be passing many people by. The EU shared portal for virus collection had the data uploaded in September, but no trend was - of course - yet apparent until more and more data was collected over a couple of months.

1 professor stating something doesn't make it true. The majority are stating this is normal, and I prefer a vast majority when it comes to science. If this changes or mistakes are shown to have been made then I'll change my mind, as none of us here are experts and are relying on a majority of qualified experts to translate this to us.

By Nov it was obvious something was wrong (there were reports of London getting spread going up even during "lockdown" in Oct) - certainly by start of Dec it was clear to Govt that this strain is different, but they kept it quiet to suit their own agenda to have nice Xmas, but the virus had other plans.

It's for that reason (most likely) they did not notify other Govts about this strain, I guess that would be one less country critising China for "slow" disclosures on this novel coronavirus.

I think you may find that most people outside of UK would agree with that Professor, even if he was wrong

I think it was actually Italy where this virus mutated into more infectious strain (as compared to original), so that already bumped it big time, and now this.

Your hindsight is impeccable. Yes, something was wrong but it wasn't totally clear what and why because the evidence wasn't there until more data were collected.

Saying that the goverment kept it quiet to suit their agenda puts you firmly in the tin foil hat camp. Now run along and get yourself a 5G mind control chip, there's a good chap.

Oh, so Govts don't routinely keep things quiet to suit their agenda?

They could not have known if that strain will be that bad in Sep, maybe not in Oct (when signs appeared), perhaps maybe even whole of Nov, but not keeping quiet until nearly Xmas time.

The motive to keep quiet is clear - try to get "normal" Xmas as Boris had promised.

That's the most sensible explanation, perhaps incompetence can explain that too, but my money on this being deliberate under the guise of - "we were not 100% sure"

Johnson actually said this today, make of it wgat you will

“I hope that everybody can see that as soon as we were briefed as a government of the fast transmissibility of this new strain at about 3.15pm on Friday afternoon, we lodged all the necessary information with the World Health Organization,”

Sent from my 5g carrier pigeon
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.
