“ The UK has made a serious error by “keeping quiet” about the new Covid-19 strain after discovering it in September, according to a senior Italian government adviser.
“What makes me angry is that the English already knew the variation was circulating in September,” said Walter Ricciardi, a virus expert. “They kept quiet and didn’t warn us. Now we need a lockdown, or at least very severe restrictions”.
Professor Ricciardi told Il Messaggero, a daily newspaper in Rome, that the UK’s tardiness in raising the alert over the new, more transmissible mutation of the virus could ultimately stop millions of Italian schoolchildren returning to school on January 7 as planned.”

The UK has an established SARS-CoV-2 genome sequencing consortium called COG-UK. It consists of the national public health institutes, National Health Service organisations, academic institutions and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. They are working to keep sequencing coverage high and geographically representative and to keep turnaround times low. The consortium is by far the largest contributor to the GISAID EpiCov database in the world, with more than 120 000 of around 270 000 genomes published so far. This initiative increases the likelihood that emerging variants are identified and can be assessed in a timely fashion.Last edited by ladymuck; 21 December 2020, 18:49.Comment

Quite the idiotic comment from the professor. Doctors I know have repeated that there are many variants of the virus. These are not "kept quiet" but are broadcast in the scientific communities.
It just so happens that the other variants weren't as contagious as this new variant. In order to determine if something is more contagious, deadly, causes a different or more serious illness, we have to wait for a period of time to let nature take its course. It was not possible to know that in late September. Perhaps the professor wasn't paying attention and would like to blame somewhere for something that has a mix of people. I wouldn't be surprised if similar variants are flying about the USA, given the haphazard nature of the population and the wide cultural make up of the country.Comment
