All that's happened is that the risk profile has changed significantly and banning their use is merely the sensible option.

but hey, let's blame the UK. Far more fun...
Meanwhile the rest of Europe ploughs on full steam ahead with Huawei. In 5 years time their internet will be years ahead of the UK.

If there was a huge effort to match Huawei, then the question would be "why are the Chinese so successful in Finance", and the answer would be because everyone is working on 5G telecom systems.

Globalisation means you can't do everything.
Is it really either or situation? I would think that government should unblock the skilled economy as it is currently heavily taxed and it is not financially viable and let private sector work. A lot of skill is being wasted because not everyone wants to work to pay extreme taxes.

Lord Browne quits as Huawei UK chairman as government ban looms | Business News | Sky News

Because Huawei was smart enough to hire people like Lord Browne and God knows who else (kids of politicians?) to stay in.

Big chlorinated chickens are coming home to roost.
Lord Browne (he was just John when I knew him, in the very early 90's) knew a thing or two about spending money on telecoms. He had leased lines from his house to the various offices, you don't want to know the line rental on those things back in the day. There was a very well stocked drinks cabinet in the Queen Victoria Street office, which I felt it was my duty to pillage before getting a taxi home on expenses, having gone there to fix a fault on the video-conferencing system (which cost around half-a-million to install), the fault being a mis-labelling on a patch-panel which took a few seconds to find and correct. He was a nice chap though. Which presumably means he doesn't know who drank his brandy...
His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...

What's the point of fast internet when the Chinese government knows your pin number and all your porn preferences?

Copyright theft and espionage. The tales of people leaving their laptops in meeting rooms and the hard drives being cloned over lunch are not apocryphal.

In 5 years time, all the UK will be is a country of fruit pickers. They don't need fast internet.

You're looking at the wrong country.

US eaves dropped on initimate conversations

The NSA DOES listen to everything you do and say.

China does conduct espionage but it doesn't use its Huawei transmitters.

If it wants to copy the latest technology it will simply buy the product and take it apart.

The clue as to how serious a security issue this is, is the fact that telecoms providers can continue to use Huawei for another 7 years. Not one incident of IP theft can be traced back to a Huawei transmitter, all of them are due to cyber hackers on the internet. Why would you go to the trouble spending billions on an undetectable back door when you can simply send a pfishing e-mail for a couple of dollars.
