Hi, I have been working as a contractor in financial services compliance (ie not at all IT) for a few years and have noticed on here that a standard day rate for IT contractors is circa £800 pd, whereas I have never even got to half of that. I am also furloughed.

So, can I retrain as an IT contractor? I don't have high day rate expectations given that my only IT qualification is GCSE. Where would I start to get a basic bums-on-seats position? Would it be good to learn Python on the Harvard Uni site for example?

I am IT contractor and I noticed that brain surgeons are on £2k per day. I am retraining as a brain surgeon but I need someone to practice on; I will pay you £800 pd if you let me practice lobotomy on you.

That's probably the agency rate. They send in a contractor inside IR35 on 400 pd.

Maybe OP should start an agency - there is no need to have IT skills, you just need to find contractors that will do the job and you pocket the rest.
