Funny you should say that, because I read somewhere, which seemed quite authoritative, that the Yanks have developed special drills that can cut through granite and basalt like butter, about 20 feet per minute.

So limestone, which I presume the rocks containing the caves are, should be a doddle.

Mind you, that is to get large bombs down to deep underground bunkers. So it may be they haven't bothered much with the problem of removing the spoils from behind the drill.

Ah I see someone copped it at Swildon's Hole near Priddy in Somerset, albeit 60 years ago.

I went down that as a teenager, as far as the first sump. (I believe they have now reached the 12th sump, almost at Cheddar Cave, where the water is known to exit.)



My favourite cave was Stoke Lane Slocker. At one point in there you have to swim on your back across a large flooded chamber with an inch of air at the top and your nose scraping along the ceiling, and then dip through a six foot sump with an overhang at the other side! Amazed that AFAIK nobody has ever lost it and thrown a complete wobbler in that section.

Years ago someone told me that a gravel company had dug up the whole area round Stoke Lane Slocker and the cave had gone. But I'm very pleased to see it is still there for future generations to enjoy:

Yep - the British divers who found them could only do so because they are extremely calm. This guy knew what he was doing so very calm also. Kids who haven't dived before aren't going to be calm so will run out of oxygen.

Know Porth-yr-ogof well. Been down there when I was a kid.

At this moment more pumps would seems like the best option. It'll buy them more time if nothing else.
