The thing is there are very few people who are not either male or female - in that they are born with male reproductive organs or female reproductive organs - neuter/hermaphrodite or intersex as they are collectively known are very very rare.

So the chance of being biologically misgendered is actually pretty much zero.

But remember we are not talking about people who are clearly biologically male but want to use a female pro noun because they feel they should be female because that is nothing to do with biological misgendering, instead it is to do with people choosing which gender role they wish to follow .. for today anyway.

And that's the problem - it is not assigned - it is whether the x or y chromosome fertilised the egg.

Using the term assigned implies someone had a choice in it however...

Well not exactly but in broad terms yes it is about gender identity not physiology. It is not about people born hermaphrodite or what have you.

I wonder if the point is to remove "sex" as confusing. Again, biologically that's not exactly true but in the bulk of cases, it's not really relevant the biological details.

No because they are allowed to be a female with a male's body, there is no "wrong" sex. Who is Sue?

It's actually more complicated than that. Doctors and midwives gender babies on their sex organs not their chromosomes unless there is a clear problem with their sex organs. However there is an island in Latin America where lots of boys appear female until puberty, and there are female athleteswho only found out they actually had a Y chromosome at puberty. Then there are intersex people who the doctors convinced their parents to either make them male or female from birth as it was easiest operations they could and that's would was put on their birth certificate, even though the intersex person actually realised from about aged 5+ they were actually the more of the opposite sex.

So having a third sex would cover most of these people, those who undergo gender reassignment and others who later decide to choose one of the many other genders. Also unless you are a health professional or one of their sexual partners then you shouldn't care what sex someone is.

You aren't allowed to legally choose sex selection in the UK. I think there is one exception due to genetic conditions why having a Y chromosome will mean you have a particular illness.

Having chromosomes (and possibly hormones?) for a different gender to your anatomy is pretty unusual though.

Using these cases as the basis for gender law is like basing abortion laws on the arguments about rape and incest, as people often try to argue - those are important things but a tiny proportion of cases.

Oh that's a bit of a let down. To start with I assumed it was a new shootem' up from Id Software where the idea was to mow down and blow up monster trannies, while leaving genuine gender binaries unscathed!

Not really, it's simply the distinction between physiological and psychological gender. You're only a bigot if you deny the existence of the latter or say it's not absolutely more important than the former.

We should probably do a poll to find out how many of us are bigots under that particular definition.

Problem is all all this came in because most countries didn't have a third sex on official forms. If they had then those who don't fit into male and female would have been happy as they could argue they were misclassified at birth.
