In these cases it's always to prudent to ask who benefits from this. What's the benefit to Russia for taking this guy out? If they did do it is it worth the risk and all the political/media circus around it so close to Russian elections and the world cup?

The media circus and suggestion of boycotting the world cup seems almost pre-scripted. It seems that the more gains Russia/Assad make in Syria the more of this kind of thing happens.
