For Arc welding you require a very dark mask otherwise you'll have "sand in your eyes".I'm alright JackComment

And the protection for MIG and TIG is even darker than for manual arc welding since there's no flux to reduce the incredible glare.

It's got a photocell so doesn't need batteries or anything, generates the darkening voltage from the light of the arc.
