I think the point is Spain will be allowed to hold Gibraltar to ransom in exchange for giving Scotland a very smooth ride and hence strengthen the support for Scottish independence. A kind of a double whammy.

It has always been unclear to me whether logic or sentiment would prevail in these negotiations (indeed, an important reason for ditching the EU). Obviously, there's a very strong argument for moving beyond the playground, but both sides have, at least, until the German elections to kick each other, and I suspect it will persist until September 2018. The only thing that definitively moves this from the playground sooner than September 2018 would be a victory for Le Pen, which looks very unlikely (and would be a total fecking disaster for all concerned IMHO).Comment

It's a perfect bargaining chip like many other scraps of land all over the world. It's a distraction, but it's also an easy way to annoy the UK. This is not the first and not the last time Spain "wants" Gibraltar back. Exactly what it would do with it is unknown?
