It looks as if EU rules on residency are as follows:

National Immigration Rules

Each EU country alone decides:
The total number of migrants that can be admitted to the country to look for work;
All final decisions on migrant applications;
Rules on long-term visas – stays for periods longer than three months; and
Conditions to obtain residence and work permits when no EU-wide rules have been adopted.

So the EU is just obeying its own rules and respecting the rights of individual member states. How is that making it up as it goes along?

Shared visa policies that enable non-EU citizens to travel freely for up to 3 months within Europe's single travel zone, the Schengen area.

So I read it that Schengen doesn't give an entitlement to residency across the area.

For economic purposes, the EEA negotiate as one. For immigration and residency each country can set its own rules for those who are outside the EU, or can join Schengen. Always has been. No change there.

It's almost like you didn't realise that the UK has been in charge of its own borders and can set its own visa requirements for non-EU citizens, as can every other member state.

Are you really that arrogant/stupid that you thought there was only one visa required to get a non-EU citizen in to any EU country and allow them to work there?

Much the same as ever - those inside Schengen control their borders as a group. Those outside Schengen have their own border controls, own immigration controls and own visa requirements.

Have they really that's news to me, so there were a few protests here and there but that doesn't mean that they're actually happy with it.

I agree it is a problem in most countries and that there is no easy solution to getting it right.

Like Schengen countries, the UK has shared border arrangements with Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.
