The Guardian will publish anything by hand-wringers and the loony left. I don't think anyone here has been accused of xenophobia and/or racism for suggesting that requiring a certain level of English would be a good thing.
Oh so we need to to compare Chuka with posters here, not other MPs or community leaders, I'm sure he will be impressed he has Suity & You as peers.

UK law includes the right to appeal, so what you're saying is not that UK law applies to immigrants, but that there should be a special harsher version of UK law that only applies to immigrants that we as UK citizens wouldn't tolerate for ourselves.

Either way you don't have to promise to follow laws for the laws to apply to you. They just do. I've never promised to follow any UK laws (other than the Cub Scout law - and that probably isn't legally binding).

They can appeal the conviction not the deportation. Correction You have a right to ask for an appeal against a conviction however the higher court must permit it because they believe the decision is unsound. You can currently appeal a deportation decision.

By agreeing that not having a conviction is a condition of remaining then they can deport without appeal.

For instance if you are required to have Public Liability insurance to be in contract if you let yours lapse then you are eligible for instant termination despite any Notice period mentioned.

Compulsory education? Oath swearing? all a bit extreme to me.

Fine with a mandatory English test and swearing allegiance if they want to become a citizen.

or am I being a bit extreme?

By jove I think he has got it!

The UK is going to pot - seriously.

Imagine me coming to Germany being forced to learn the German language? Imagine the millions of Mexicans living in the US being made to learn awful English?

Imagine having to swear an oath to benefit claimants are now celebrating living off the tax payer for 90 years.

          Dark days ahead.

It may, or may not, be racist, but it's certainly opportunist. Umunna has previously described this as "nasty" and "quite ugly". See Guido Fawkes website for further details.

You're only not forced because you are an EU citizen. As I understand it non-EU immigrants in Germany have to pass a language and integration test.

As an aside on naturalising in UK you have to swear an oath to the Queen, and optionally to God.

To be entitled to claim JSA, you should have to prove you are eligible to work. If you cannot speak the native language, how do you expect to get work?

Mexicans often speak better English than the native Californians; it's only the grey-market workers who get away with it because their team leaders act as interpreters too (and sports professionals - Tevez still cannot speak English for example).

The oath should be for citizenship only.

If I went to live and work in another country I'd expect to have to learn the language to get by - anything else is arrogance or naivety.

Well it rather depends on the nature of the work. Bit of a blanket statement that you need English to work here... also are you meaning half-decent English or rudimentary equivalent to Schoolboy French?

Was watching a British movie last night on the iMac, a line in it was "Bleeding ****, taking over the country, they're all over the place..."

Was the first Steptoe and Son movie; from 1972........

                      Nothing much changes.....
