I'm not vain or virtuous, I just don't like seeing people suffer, and then vilified for seeking a way out of it, especially when the suffering is a direct consequence of USA/UK meddling.

That is hardly a fair analysis. It could well be argued that the USA/UK meddling has not helped as much as it was hoped, but prior to our intervention there was plenty of "suffering" being dished out by a variety of bloodthirsty dictators in the middle east region.
Whilst I accept we have to hold our hands up to making a bit of a hash of our Exit strategy, we have only been a small part of the overall problem.
Not that this stops us getting a disproportionate share of the overall blame in order to appease the handwringing lefties, with their over-developed guilt complexes.

Thing is it's probably too late now, take Iraq and maybe Libya, controlled by nutters, largely under control though, very few emigres, peoples 'in check'. In come the West to 'liberate' bedlam.

If a Dictator creates a reasonably healthy society then fine, Cuba for instance seems to have done reasonably well out of it I wouldn't suggest we try to change that, just hope they find democracy when they need to.
