How many people enjoy a bit of Shakespeare in the UK? Only kids who are forced to read it, and a minority of oddballs. Vast majority don't.

Whereas in southern Italy most people go for a walk in the evening and chat to other locals, while dressed well- passeggiata I think they call it- that is culture.

The Beatles are a pop product, an item for purchase - that is not culture. You could argue that a popular music scene is cultural but not one pop band.

Well, I know what you mean there but surely that's a product of their climate? I don't think we've ever done that here though plenty of people go for a family Sunday walk in my neck of the woods.

Took my Daughter to Brownies last night & the other to St Johns Ambulance, on Tuesday to Youth Club. Middle one played netball & rowed (indoor) if they were boys I would be taking them to Football & Rugby.

Last night I read Peppa Pig, Shaun the Sheep & Bob the builder to Mini V.

During the Day I listened to Phil Collins, the Beatles, Eric Clapton & the Clash (among others).

I just walked past DVDs of Tinker Tailor Soldies spy, Yes Minister & Allo Allo.

Strange all of those came from England (if only the rules) and are worldwide exports of culture.

Admittedly I did read a bit of Voltaire last night so I'm not limited to England.

I think you are probably not familiar with his work? His stories have been told and retold over the centuries. Most people are enjoying shakespeare's work and they don't even know it. Even Revenge of the Sith was a revamp of Othello (a very bad one but none the less watched by millions)

But more importantly I think culture in the UK is changing. Traditionally Culture was something that was owned by the educated observers of the time. so the 30's were defined by the aristocrats and people like the Mitford Sisters, the Postwar era was the brith of pop music and much of the story was told through the lenses of the three photographers Duffy, Bailey and Donovan (others as well) Jeffry Bernard and the other soho drunks did a good job of making soho the place to be.

and the seventies the story started to be told through through TV top of the pops and later MTV

In those times most of the world was drunkenly ******* their existence away but no-one was watching so it all vanished.

Today we have Facebook and Twatter and so every ****wit with a camera can show what the subculture is up to. Its almost got to the point that the masses now own the story of their time not the educated few. So the real culture of the thousands will be lost in the screaming match of does my arse look big in this?...

However, to say just because the majority like to drink beer and to chat crap in a bar full of loud music, that we have no culture misses the point by a country mile...

You are doing what dodgy agent said in a different thread. You are making a point about yourself here, not about UK culture per se.

Culture has to be collectively enjoyed by a society, by definition. And what you have in the UK is drinking, football (mass commercialism destroying another working class culture) and watching TV. All the other things are minority interests, so they are not culture.

But carry on quoting minority pastimes to validate your own status.
