If Britain joins the custom union then third countries such as China and Japan can export to the UK via their EU distribution centres using EU tariffs, but the UK won't be able to export directly to Japan and China etc. Firstly it will put the UK at a massive disadvantage in negotiating deals with countries who can simply bypass the UK by exporting via the EU, ("why should we agree to your terms when we can export via the EU" ) and secondly it will motivate UK companies to invest heavily in the EU to be able to export at the same preferential tariffs, because they can't get the deals they want.

The Brexit negotiations are going to be interesting. Whatever happens the EU will remain the centre of the UK's universe.
