It's something I've thought about for a couple of years but never quite got on with. But now it might be now or never...

WFH contract at the moment, so I could do that from anywhere. Don't know if it'll continue beyond next month though. I do have a bit of a Plan B possibility, and I could do that from anywhere too and living somewhere cheap means there's not as much pressure on how much I need to earn.

But I don't fancy moving somewhere I don't know anyone to sit at home by myself all day.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

You can always go and work in one of those tech "working spaces" that the hipsters (they are good for something) set up. Loads in London or Berlin. You'll soon make friends there.
You sound like a good match for Berlin TBH, since you want cheap living for your plan B.
You been? Go for a weekend and have a look.

Not to Berlin. I used to do the Nurbrugring every year for many years running so I've been to Germany lots of times and always liked it there. I did a couple of years of German evening classes too, but I have some way to go on that front.

Quick search and the rents look like about double what I'm paying now.

I'm not the best person at getting off my arse and doing things; that's the problem.

You can get away with not speaking German in Berlin. Tech companies use English.
If you find Berlin rents expensive where do you live now ?
I think if you shared with someone they really are cheap - if I was new in town that's what I would do. Get some company and someone to show you the ropes from the off.

I think we're all going to have to "MTFU" and "play the game" now, if only to escape
If I was single I wouldn't think twice. Saying WTF and doing things, I've noticed, is always the best decision, makes you think on your feet and you always survive and thrive even if you don't believe it at first.

I like the Portugese. Amiable people with a laid back attitude which is what I'd be after when looking at retirement options. There's a nice pace of life in Portugal and in my experience you're less likely to encounter poorly behaved chav's fresh off a Ryanair flight looking to booze it up.

The Swiss are terrible. Don't come here. Too many foreigners.

Aren't there tax implications in being permanently based in, say Portugal or Spain? Even if you're working via your Ltd in the UK, surely you'd be liable for Portugese/Spanish income tax?
