Britain would go to the ‘back of the queue' for US trade deals post-Brexit

The fact that you can buy a Ford so easily at a competitive price hides the fact that it's the culmination of a long and complicated process whereby your Ford which could have been assembled in Belgium, say, is available for sale in the UK without tariffs.
I'm no expert on trade deals, but I am told that one has never existed between the EU and the USA. However, the USA is a capitalist society, and we gobble up its products perforce. Ford will sell me a car, at a competative price, whether Obama wills it or not (and he wills it). Even if he wanted to put me at the back of his imaginary "queue", he couldn't. He simply doesn't have the power. Ford and other giants want to trade with everyone, everywhere, all the time. If a "trade deal" were required for that, it will be set up within minutes. Rambling on about "long and complicated process" is nonsense in 2016. In short, capitalism will out, and brooks no impediment or delay.

For Obama to give shy, coquettish hints about "maybe we won't want to sell you a car" is comic. What is he doing, flirting with us?

Technically, there was one once, but they didn't like it much, and kicked off about it...

Apologies, misread your post, thought you meant UK and USA. Nothing more to see here...
His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...

I'll try to keep it simple for you.

If you buy an American built Ford (say a Mustang) in the UK, you'll be paying an extra surcharge, say, 10% compared to 0% for a Belgium built Ford (this varies by engine size and other factors).

Why do you think so few US built cars are sold here and why the Japs built factories in the UK to export to Europe?
Do you not think the Japs would have liked to keep the jobs to themselves?

This extra is the bit that trade deals aim to reduce or eliminate.

If we leave the EU, most likely British built cars, Qashqais, Jags and Land Rovers ( and interestingly I'm guessing German built cars in the UK , like Mini) will suddenly be more expensive in Europe, if they impose tariffs.
In the long run it wont be worth them investing any more.

You may have to try harder, Sas.

So what would be the obvious answer:

            a) Manufactures lobby the EU (or more specifically the German government) and insist post-Brexit trade deals are favourable;

            b) Manufacturers go through the grief of relocating their plants and skilled labour.

            Hmmm...

If I was BMW, Minis owner I would weigh up the pros and cons: higher prices on British built competition in Europe versus higher prices on BMWs in the UK. Europe as a whole is a much larger market and BMWs in the UK are not price-sensitive items. I would definitely be lobbying for tariffs to be imposed on British cars, and take the hit on the smaller, lower margin Minis, prior to moving the Mini factory back to Germany where it would provide jobs for Germans.

Of course the Japanese who comprise the bulk of car manufacturing in the Uk will not get a say.

I'll simplify it even further for you. Forget the detail, the global market will take care of it.

I understand that people might be nervous in leaving someting we have been part of for 30 years. I am too. But the fears are unfounded. It is just that: nervousness.

Some of us think big decisions should be made with some analysis not "hit and hope".
