Erm, nope, what I'm saying is that the EU isn't likely to tear up trade deals if we do leave.

Wouldn't existing deals cease with our membership - one argument is that even with all the will in the world such favourable treaties could take years to sort out.

That said nobody ever left before so all the rules are pretty untested. Maybe the EU can vote to keep the bits it deems beneficial?

It takes 2 minutes to blag a contractor into taking a rate 25% lower than what he has asked for and another 2 minutes to blag the client into paying 25% more than he/she was expecting to pay.
If the UK employed me I could do something similar with Angela Merkel in the space of 5 minutes. Furthermore I would take her out for lunch.

No one's saying trade would stop, but under what terms?

If I was the lobby body that represented German car manufacturers for example (and I'm guessing they are fairly powerful) I would demand tariffs on UK manufactured cars in the knowledge that

                  (1) if the UK reciprocated , it wouldn't matter that much since people who buy German luxury cars in the Uk are not price sensitive.
                  (2) the cheaper cars made by the UK (usually Japanese brands for the price sensitive) would suddenly cost more in Europe, thus removing some competition from the Germans.

If I was a Japanese manufacturer, say, I wouldn't be investing in the UK anymore - its a no brainer to invest within Europe, with its much larger markets.

Unless of course we compete as a low wage economy on the edge of Europe - I really can see that happening given past economic policy in this country.

So, ironically, the poorly educated, lower-skilled people who tend to vote for Brexit in the hope it'll give them protection from immigrant competition could well find themselves with lower pay.
Because in the end it's not the government that provides jobs, it's corporations.
And I can see no scenario (unless its low pay) that would make a manufacturing corporation choose to set up in the Uk rather than Europe, post-Brexit.

Very interesting article in the Telegraph this morning talking about the Davos "intelligent" elite and the establishment and their attitude to the EU. It is essentially about these people's belief that us stupid plebs cannot be trusted with Democracy and that we need these people to oversee the rest of us

We’re so used to EU rule that we’ve forgotten how to do it for ourselves

Take the Remain camp: its world view might as well be inspired by the works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, one of the French-speaking-world’s most famous thinkers.
His message was as powerful as it was terrifying. The people “must be forced to be free”. The reason? In a good and mature society, we would all abide naturally by “the general will”; in the real world, unfortunately, people don’t always do the right thing and must, therefore, be guided by an enlightened elite.

I think I prefer to take my chances and trust sharing my decisions with your average pleb than trust the rich and powerful

                      .
And as Germany exports more to the UK than it imports from the UK we would be quids in
