Is the crappy role going to hurt your confidence more? Having to deal with crap day in and day out, without a decent team behind you, could be even more detrimental.

It might all be very well getting a sliver of a silver lining, but not if it means a failed project on your cv.

Anyway that means I am benched and back on the prowl for gigs
So what happened - you got a gig using the higher-level skill, and you got fired due to incompetance?

Anyone can go through the process of a project but there are very few good PMs out there.

Crappy gig with a crappy company tells me you are going to be doing everything in a haphazard way which will do little to further your skills or your career. IMO avoid at all costs unless this is your new future direction.
CV wise I have a PM role on there at the moment, and would use the PM XYZ, with XYZ being the skill I want, and implementing XYZ as the description so it doesn't look to out of place, the last PM role was again not a true PM just implementing my old skill set just named as a PM.

PM is not my future direction, but it would boost the warchest so I can be picky and maybe skill up on my own dime rather than Reskill In Permie which I tried to do

What are you looking to do, move up from BA to PM? I've always believed that the perm route is for ladder climbing and the contract route is for demonstrating expertise and enjoying the varied roles and opportunities to increase experience and being your own boss.

I think you've got a very personal choice based on your circumstances there then. I'm extremely protective of my CV but it sounds like you've dabbled a bit and it's not hurting you.
I'd say this one is down to a gut feeling for you IMO.

We need more info. to mock and/or judge you irrationally, which is presumably what you're after?

Seriously, though, what was the stretch? You'd need to assess how you stretched (vs. a difference in expectations) and what the intermediate positions might be to avoid stretching next time.
