    Leasing a car

    Does anyone do it?

Is it still better value to buy and then claim mileage?

Considering doing it as having moved to a bigger pad I am surrounded by Porsches m3's and range rovers so my shed of a 10 year old mondeo is looking rather sad.

We have quite a few threads on this as it is asked quite regularly...

Have a dig through this lot for your answer...

Contract cars seem a better option if you want a new car. No point buying a depreciating asset with unknown future value if you can rent for a couple of years. I did a few calculations on it the other week and a BMW 5 series advertised at £215 + VAT on a personal lease worked out at about £308/month over two years by the time you've factored in the deposit. Mercedes and BMW seemed to do the best deals but you may have to be flexible on the model.

If your Mondeo is still mechanically reliable, do you really care what the neighbours think?

If by mechanically reliable you mean not pissing oil, not needing a new exhaust and cv joint and not smelling like a tramps crackers then no.

Hey , welcome on my ship. I'm fighting every day with myself not to buy that damn deprecating pussy magnet so far having my seat Ibiza 1.2 and impressing my granny at most .
But hey , houses first , right ?

As for the topic: it's never economically sensible to lease or pcp. It's better to take it on a loan , and sell after 3 years. Did the math and it's just massive waste of cash.

General opinion has been that you are better off buying privately and claiming the milage. However, if the proposed changes to T&S go through as they currently are then the balance seems to swing the otherway, especially if you are doing lots of miles. Will be worth waiting untill the Autumn Statement to see whats happening IMO.

There's a good point. Instead of claiming mileage in future (which we cant) will it be better to provide yourself with a company car?
